An unauthorized trash burn just northwest of Rose Hill quickly
turned into an uncontrolled field fire. Fire crews from four
different stations brought the fire under control after just more
than an hour.
The fire scorched a 3/4 mile stretch of grass fields. Two
plowed fields helped fire crews. The fields, far less
flammable than dry grass, slowed the fire.
"If that other field--the plowed field--wouldn't have been there,
then it would have been an open shot into waist-high and
shoulder-high grass," said Rose Hill Fire Chief Dan Armstrong.
Butler County lifted its burn ban last Monday, but county fire
officials still consider it too dangerous to burn. They are
currently not issuing any burn permits.
It was a tough day all-around for Rose Hill firefighters. A
fellow firefighter, 28-year-old Jason Johnson, died Saturday
afternoon from an unknown medical condition. Johnson served as
a volunteer firefighter for Rose Hill for several years and leaves
behind a wife and 4-year-old son.
